70 minutes from the hotel, the Château de Castelnaud is one of the most beautiful castles in the Dordogne and the most visited in the South West. Overlooking the Dordogne valley, perched on a rocky outcrop, the medieval fortress has been listed as a Historic Monument since 1966.

A bit of history…

A first castle was built in the 12th century, owned by the Cathar lord Bernard de Casnac at the beginning of the 13th century. It will be destroyed during the crusade against the Albigenses led by the army of Simon de Monfort in 1214. A new castle is then rebuilt.

During the Hundred Years War, the castle passed in turn into the French and English camp. After a siege ordered by Charles VII in 1442, the castle was definitively taken by the armies of the King of France. At the end of the conflict, the castle returned to the Caumont family, legitimate owners since 1368 and remained so until the Revolution.

The Museum of War in the Middle Ages

Inaugurated in 1985, the museum houses a collection of more than 250 pieces of ancient arms and armor in the lodgings of the fortress (swords, crossbows, chain mail, etc.), as well as beautiful pieces of furniture from the 14th and 15th centuries. The castle also exhibits impressive reconstructions of jet engines from the Middle Ages.

The castle is open all year round, every day.
